Building Factories That Look Good in Satisfactory

What separates a factory people screenshot from one that just works. Layout habits, colour discipline and the structural tricks behind most impressive builds.

The gap between a functional factory and one worth screenshotting is smaller than it looks, and almost none of it is decoration. It is mostly decisions made before the first machine goes down.

Start with the grid, not the machines

Every impressive build has one thing in common: it respects a consistent grid.

Foundations snap to a global grid shared across the whole world, which is why two structures built kilometres apart still line up. Working with that instead of against it is the single highest-leverage habit.

Practically:

  • Lay a foundation platform before placing any machine. Even a rough one. It fixes your height and alignment for everything after.
  • Pick a module size and stay with it. Four by four foundations, eight by eight, whatever suits — the point is consistency, so extensions align without thought.
  • Leave deliberate corridors for belts and pipes rather than routing them around machines afterwards. A factory where every belt runs in a channel reads as designed; one where belts wander reads as improvised.

Build up, not out

Sprawling factories are harder to make look good and harder to navigate. Vertical factories look intentional because the constraint forces order.

Conveyor Lifts make this practical — they move items between floors in a single tile’s footprint, in the same six marks as belts. A three-floor factory with lifts between them occupies a third of the ground area of the flat equivalent, and the resulting silhouette is what most memorable screenshots are actually showing.

The trade is that vertical factories are harder to debug, since you cannot see the whole line at once. Balance accordingly: production floors stacked, but each floor readable on its own.

Colour with restraint

The factories that look worst are usually the most colourful. A small palette used consistently beats a large one used decoratively.

A structure that works:

  • Neutral for structure. Foundations, walls, frames — one or two greys.
  • One accent colour for whatever you want the eye drawn to.
  • Functional colour reserved entirely for pipes and signage.

That last rule is what makes colour-coding useful. If your walls are already six different colours, a colour-coded pipe carries no information. Keep the environment quiet and the meaningful colour stands out.

For pipes specifically, the game’s own colour values for each fluid are available, so a line carrying water can literally be water-coloured rather than approximately blue. Just be aware several fluid colours are near-black — Crude Oil especially — and will disappear against dark foundations unless you frame them.

Light it

An unlit factory looks like a construction site regardless of how well designed it is. Lights are cheap, draw very little power, and change the appearance more per material spent than anything else you can build.

Prefer a smaller number of larger light sources to a scattering of small ones — same illumination, considerably less rendering cost, and cleaner geometry.

Blueprints for repetition

The Blueprint Designer lets you save a chunk of factory and stamp it repeatedly. For appearance this matters more than for speed: repeated identical modules look deliberate in a way that hand-built variations do not.

The workflow that pays off: design one production module carefully — machines, belts, lighting, colour — then blueprint it and repeat. The whole factory inherits the care you put into the first one.

Since 1.2, vehicle paths can be included in blueprints too, so a standard road segment is repeatable in the same way.

Structural tricks worth knowing

Build into terrain. Foundations clip into hillsides without complaint. Half-buried factories look like they belong to the landscape rather than sitting on it.

Use pillars honestly. A platform floating on visible pillars reads better than one mysteriously hovering. The pillars are part of the design.

Frame the entrance. Almost every build people share has one obvious way in. A deliberate entrance turns a box into a building.

Vary the roofline. Uniform height across a large footprint reads as a warehouse. Stepped or differing heights read as architecture.

What to do about the mess you already have

Most people ask this question fifty hours in, with a working factory that grew organically and looks it.

The realistic answer is not to rebuild it. It is to build the next thing properly and leave the old site as it is. Early factories are usually superseded anyway once you have better recipes and higher belt marks, and the effort of retrofitting a sprawl is larger than building fresh nearby.

If you do want to improve an existing site cheaply: add foundations under everything to create a floor, add lighting, and pick one colour to unify the machines. Those three changes cost very little and do most of the work.

Screenshots and Photo Mode

If the point is sharing the build, Photo Mode is worth learning rather than taking in-game screenshots from wherever you happen to be standing.

Three things do most of the work. Get low and look up — factories read as imposing from below and as flat from above. Shoot at dusk or at night with the factory lit, because lit windows and glowing machines against a dark background carry far more contrast than a midday shot. And include something for scale, whether that is the pioneer, a vehicle, or terrain, so the size actually registers.

The fog density slider matters here too. Heavy atmosphere hides distant detail; clearing it lets a large build read all the way back.

Designing for the person who has to fix it

There is a tension between a factory that photographs well and one that is comfortable to maintain, and it is worth resolving deliberately rather than discovering it later.

Fully enclosed factories look excellent and are miserable to debug, because every belt is behind a wall. Completely open ones are easy to work on and look like scaffolding.

The compromise most good builds land on: enclose the outside, leave the inside open. Walls and roof on the exterior for the silhouette, and interior floors left visible so you can follow a line from input to output without dismantling anything. Access hatches or a removable wall panel at the points you know you will revisit costs nothing and saves a lot of frustration.

Common mistakes

Placing machines before foundations. Everything after inherits the misalignment.

Using colour decoratively everywhere. It destroys colour’s usefulness as information.

Building flat because it is easier. Vertical is what makes builds look designed, and lifts make it practical.

Blueprinting a module you have not finished designing. You will stamp the mistakes twenty times.

Rebuilding an old factory to make it pretty. Build the next one properly instead.
