Satisfactory Night Sky, Stars and Lighting Settings
How to change the night sky, why the star pattern repeats, and which graphics settings actually control how dark nights get and how your factory lights look.
Two different questions get asked with the same words here. Some people want to change what the sky looks like; others want their factory to stop being pitch black at night. They have different answers.
The sky is part of the world, not a setting
Satisfactory’s planet orbits a binary system — there are two suns, and the sky you see is authored world geometry, not a skybox you can swap. There is no in-game option to change the night sky, replace the stars, or alter the aurora.
What you can change is how the sky is rendered and how bright the night is. That is a graphics and gameplay settings question, and it is where the useful answers live.
The repeating star pattern
If you look up at night and notice the stars are visibly tiled, that is a known rendering artefact rather than something you have misconfigured. It is most obvious at high resolutions and with certain field-of-view settings, because more of the sky texture is on screen at once.
Nothing in the options menu removes it. Lowering FOV makes it less noticeable simply because less sky is visible. It is cosmetic and does not affect anything else.
Making nights less dark
This is what most people actually want. Three separate controls affect it, and they are in different places.
Gamma / brightness, in Video settings. The blunt instrument. Raising it lightens everything including daytime, which washes out the look, but it is instant and works everywhere.
The Game Modes menu, added in 1.2. This is where you will find world-behaviour options rather than rendering ones. Worth checking here before fighting with gamma, because changing the world rules is cleaner than compensating with brightness.
Actually lighting your factory. The real answer for a base you spend time in. Lights are cheap, they draw very little power, and a lit factory looks dramatically better at night than a bright-gamma one.
Lighting a factory properly
The lighting buildings unlock reasonably early and are among the cheapest things you will ever build.
Street Light — 25 Quickwire, 4 Copper Sheet, 2 Encased Industrial Beam. Lights a wide area, colour and intensity adjustable, supports up to two power line connections. This last part matters more than it sounds: you can chain street lights along a path and use them as the power line itself rather than running separate cable.
Ceiling and flood lights cover interiors and large open halls respectively.
All lights support colour and intensity adjustment individually, and they all connect to the grid. Their draw is small enough that lighting a whole factory is not a meaningful power decision.
Colour as a working tool, not decoration
Once you are adjusting light colour, the same logic applies to the buildings themselves. The Customizer lets you set colours per building or per swatch slot, and the practical use is legibility rather than aesthetics.
The highest-value application is pipes: colour each fluid line to match what runs through it, and a fluid network becomes readable at a glance. We keep a reference of the game’s own colour value for every liquid and gas so you can paste the exact code in rather than eyeballing it.
Two lighting-adjacent cautions from that reference: Crude Oil is nearly black, and Dark Matter Residue is barely lighter. On dark foundations, in a dim factory, those lines are invisible. Pair them with a light-coloured frame, a sign, or a nearby lamp, rather than relying on pipe colour alone.
Signs read better than colour at distance
Colour tells you what a line is when you are next to it. Signs tell you from across the room. For anything you will return to under time pressure — fuel lines, the input to a manifold you keep adjusting — a sign beats a colour.
The combination that works: colour for identification, signs for navigation, and lights so both are actually visible after dark.
Performance
Lighting is one of the cheaper things you can add visually. Individual lights are not a meaningful cost. What does cost frames is the number of separate light sources rendering at once in a dense area, so a hall with two hundred individually placed lamps is a different proposition from one with a dozen flood lights covering the same space.
If your factory is running poorly at night specifically, that is the thing to look at — count of light sources, not the lights themselves.
The day-night cycle, and planning around it
Night is not an event you need to prepare for the way it is in a survival game. Nothing spawns differently, nothing attacks because it is dark, and no mechanic punishes you for being outside. The only real consequence is that you cannot see.
That makes the whole subject a comfort question rather than a strategy one, which is worth saying plainly because players arriving from other genres often assume there is something they are supposed to be doing about it.
Two practical implications:
Light the places you work, not the whole map. Your main factory floor, the paths between buildings you use constantly, and anywhere you do fiddly placement work. Lighting an entire mining outpost you visit twice is wasted effort.
Build lights early rather than late. They unlock cheaply, and the difference between a lit and an unlit factory at night is larger than almost any other visual change you can make for the same materials.
Getting a consistent look across a large base
Once you are past the point of lighting for visibility and into lighting for appearance, consistency matters more than any individual choice.
Pick a small palette and stick to it. Two or three light colours across the whole base reads as deliberate; a dozen reads as clutter. The same applies to building colours: the factories that look best are usually the ones using the fewest distinct colours, with those colours carrying meaning.
A pattern that works well: neutral colours for structure, one accent colour for the thing you want the eye drawn to, and functional colour reserved entirely for pipes and signage. That way, when something is colour-coded, it stands out because nothing else is competing for attention.
