Satisfactory Storage Containers and Losing Items

Where items actually go when they seem to vanish, what each container holds, and how to build storage that stops a full line from stalling everything behind it.

Items in this game are not destroyed casually. When something appears to have vanished, there is almost always a specific place it went, and knowing the short list saves a lot of searching.

Where items actually go

Into a full machine’s input buffer. Machines hold a small stock of each input. Items you belted in are sitting there, not gone.

Into pipe volume. A pipe holds roughly 1.3 m³ per metre. A long fluid line contains a surprising amount of product that has not arrived yet.

Into a container you forgot about. Especially common with a Smart Splitter set to Overflow feeding a container off to one side.

Backed up along the belt. A full downstream consumer means a line of items sitting stationary all the way back. Nothing is lost; nothing is moving either.

Dropped on death. Your inventory goes into a crate at the spot. It stays there, and it is marked on your HUD.

Taken by a co-op partner. Shared world, shared containers.

Dismantling does not eat your solids. Dismantle a container with items still in it and the contents drop into a dismantle crate on the spot. You get the building back and the items are sitting there waiting. The wiki even documents a relocation trick that relies on this: mass-select several containers, walk to where you want them, and dismantle — the items all land in one crate at the destination.

Fluids are the exception, and it matters. Dismantling a Pipeline or a Fluid Buffer deletes the fluid inside. There is no crate. A Freight Car carrying fluid does produce a crate, which makes the pipeline behaviour easy to be caught out by.

So the rule is: solids survive dismantling, fluids in pipes and buffers do not. Drain a fluid system before rebuilding it.

Slots, not items — each slot holds a full stack of whatever is in it, so actual capacity depends on stack size. A container of items stacking to 500 holds far more than one of items stacking to 50.

Both have input and output ports on multiple faces, which matters for layout: you can belt into one side and out of another without routing around the building.

Storage as a pressure valve

The most useful thing a container does is absorb surplus so a full line does not stall everything upstream.

The pattern: a Smart Splitter set to Overflow on the main line, with the overflow output feeding a container. Items only divert when the main consumers are backed up. Your production keeps running, the surplus accumulates somewhere useful, and nothing stalls.

The same arrangement with an AWESOME Sink instead of a container converts surplus into coupons rather than storing it. Which you want depends on whether the surplus is something you will need later.

Storage as a buffer

A container between an irregular producer and a steady consumer smooths delivery. This is worth doing whenever the supply arrives in bursts — from a train, from a shared line, from a producer that shares its output.

The caution: a buffer delays a mismatch, it does not fix one. If the consumer permanently outpaces the producer, the container empties and you are back where you started, just later.

Why a full container stops your factory

A container that is completely full stops accepting input. If it is the only destination for a line, that line backs up, and the machines feeding it stop.

This is the intended behaviour and it is usually what you want — but it produces a confusing symptom, because the thing that stopped is several buildings upstream from the thing that is full.

The habit worth building: when a line stops for no visible reason, walk it forward, not backward. The cause is almost always downstream.

Dimensional Depot

Later in the game, the Dimensional Depot lets you upload items and withdraw them anywhere from your personal inventory. It changes storage from a logistics problem into a convenience one for the specific items you route into it.

It does not replace containers for production buffering. It replaces the trip back to base to collect building materials, which is a different and very welcome thing.

Organising storage so it stays useful

One item type per container. Mixed containers are unreadable and cannot be belted out usefully without filtering.

Label them. Signs cost almost nothing and a wall of identical containers is otherwise guesswork.

Put them where you build, not where the production is. A storage wall next to your main construction area saves more time than one next to the smelters.

Do not build a giant storage hall early. Most of what you stockpile at tier three is irrelevant by tier six. Buffer what you use; sink the rest.

Building a storage wall that works

If you do want a central materials store — and having one next to your build area is genuinely useful — a few decisions make the difference between a wall you use and a wall you avoid.

Belt into the containers, do not hand-fill them. A storage wall fed by a line from production stays stocked without attention. One filled by hand becomes stale the moment you get busy.

Feed it from overflow, not from the main line. Divert surplus into storage rather than routing production through it. That way a full storage wall never stalls the factory it is attached to.

Group by what you build with, not by production chain. Plates, rods, wire, concrete and frames next to each other is what you actually reach for when constructing. Sorting by which smelter made them helps nobody.

Leave the wall extendable at one end. You will add to it.

Emptying a container efficiently

Two things worth knowing when you need to clear one out.

Containers have output ports on multiple faces, so you can belt contents away to an AWESOME Sink without dismantling anything. For a container of obsolete early-game materials this is far quicker than moving items by hand.

And if you are dismantling the container itself, you do not need to empty it first — the contents drop into a crate. That crate is easy to walk away from and forget about, though, so pick it up before moving on.

Common mistakes

Assuming items vanished. Check the machine buffers, the pipe volume and the overflow container first.

Assuming dismantling destroys your items. It does not — solids drop into a crate. The exception is fluid in pipes and buffers, which is deleted.

Tracing a stalled line backwards. The cause is downstream.

Using one container for several item types. It cannot be belted out cleanly afterwards.

Stockpiling everything. Early materials stop mattering. Sink surplus instead of warehousing it.
